This lake was created because there was a need for large quantities of sand on the other side of the highway. So became this former area full of green hay meadows and old peat pits an industrial area of national importance during the roaring sixties.
The big hole on the other side of the highway filled with the water from the stream that ran right through the area. The water filled with fish and swimmers and migratory birds of all kinds. The big hole was called De Paalse Plas. Years later development started and 18 little round holes got drilled in the area around the lake. A new golf club was born. Thankfully it is still possible to kayak, swim or sail on the main lake. I cannot say why it's called the most beautiful place in the world on the website of the community of Beringen. Caught between the windmills, the noise of the highway and the horizon full of industry buildings I guess there are some area's in the world that are more deservant of this title. |
