The DommelA small creek, at some places a small river, 120 kilometers long, the Dommel in a nutshell. In thruth, that's selling the Dommel a bit short, it is a beautiful meandering small river. It passes several nature reserves where it is allowed to meander freely. It's here that this beautiful river shines, the banks change with the seasons and every season has its own upsides.
As with a lot of rivers in Belgium the Dommel has been straightened in many places, it's only in recent years that the general politics have changed. Where it used to be, get the water to the sea as fast as possible, it has changed to, let the river hold the water longer so it can clean itself and distribute its water where it is needed. As the waterlevels keep dropping year after year this changing of politics is definitely necessary. After the cleanup of the riverwater that has been done in the past decades, this will be the next major challenge of the future. The water quality in the Dommel is quite good after Eindhoven because of the water treatment facility there. Upstream from Eindhoven and on the Belgian side of the border the quality may vary. During heavy rains there can be spillage from the sewers. But most of the time its waters are very clear. |
