The Zwarte Nete is one of seven small rivers flowing through the township of Retie and one of eleven rivers who at a certain point all merge together in the Kleine Nete at the watermill of Retie. A few hundred meters upstream from the watermill in a small but beautiful nature reserve the Zwarte Nete flows into the Witte Nete.
During heavy rains the area gets flooded and the river deposits a lot of nutriënts there.

A bit of a challenge to kayak on the Zwarte Nete. You need a low waterlevel because of the many low concrete bridges build by local farmers. Otherwise you get a lot of dis- and re-embarking every few hundred meters. On the other hand, when the waterlevel is too low, you get stuck. The many meanders show that the course of the river still flows very natural. Because of these meanders it is a fun piece of river to paddle, short but diverse. A lot of tight turns so it's no fun with a big seakayak here.
